History of the Union

The Union of Slovak Philatelists (Zväz slovenských filatelistov, ZSF) builds upon a long tradition of organized philately in Slovakia. Its development reflects key milestones that shaped the national philatelic community and its position within the international environment.

Early Beginnings (1890)
The roots of organized philately in Slovakia date back to 1890 with the establishment of the Kremnica Society, one of the earliest initiatives that fostered systematic collecting and exchange among philatelists.

Founding of the Modern Union (1969)
The modern ZSF was formally established in 1969 during the first assembly of Slovak philatelists held in Sliač. This foundational event laid the groundwork for developing a structured national organization dedicated to philately.

Development During the 1970s and 1980s
Despite various social and political challenges during the 1970s, the ZSF actively promoted philately by organizing local exhibitions, meetings, and educational activities.
In the 1980s, the Union strengthened community engagement, becoming an important platform for cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the promotion of philatelic culture across Slovakia.

New Era After 1990
After the political transformation of 1990, the Union continued its independent activity and focused more explicitly on Slovak philately, reflecting the cultural heritage of the newly formed Slovak Republic.

In 1993, the ZSF became a member of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP), which opened the door for Slovak exhibitors to participate in international exhibitions and strengthened global cooperation.

Ongoing Exhibitions and Activities
The Union regularly organizes exhibitions, seminars, workshops, and educational programs that support both advanced collectors and newcomers. A recent milestone was BRATISLAVAFILA 2023, an exhibition that successfully showcased Slovak philately and enhanced its international visibility.
